Imagine a world that is kinder, greener, and far more enchanting than our own, providing a sanctuary from the turmoil of the real world. HYLA offers an escape, a refuge, a space where readers can take a breather, lose themselves in the story, smile, maybe shed a tear, and come back feeling a little lighter, a little more able and willing to cope. Find solace from a harsh, political world. Spend time exploring the haven I've created with you in mind.
I wrote this tale for you.
The Fortress at the Cliffs
Discovered by Mother, the Fortress, a network of caves in the heights of the Cliffs, made possible the Healing Shelters.
Here the sick could convalesce and wait for treatment at Welcome House.
The Fortress later played a role in the treatment of the Seaside Fever that threatened Aintree in the Hill Country.
Wythe House in the Hill Country
In fulfillment of his wedding vows and with the guidance of his father Temmor, Gregor Slen built Wythe House on the banks of the River Wythe, for Adloria.
It features a Gardener's Cottage, a terraced outdoor garden, and an orchard.
Wythe House includes a scriptorium for study, document creation and bookbinding; a roofless room, and a garden of remedy.
The Academy at Grenner Grove
Established in the High Country by Hand and Dryssa his wife.
The Academy began as a men's social club and evolved into a university-like institution that admitted only sons as students and only men as faculty and Academy officers.
Both Xavier Manyon and his son, Healer Manyon taught at the Academy.
Xavier Manyon became Chancellor of the Academy after Prysor Dinsmoor elected to retire.
Candlebridge in the Hill Country:
Candlebridge (originally called Mudbridge) was the gift of Brenmor the Leader to Fenn the Architect to reward him for the reconstruction of the Watch Walls of the City after the Terrible Wars.
On the advice of a valued foreman, Fenn equipped the estate for the care and keeping of bees. Honey, beeswax, and candles became the primary responsibility of the Cottagers of Candlebridge.
The Cottagers, owing to their frequent deliveries of these products, soon came to serve as messengers and couriers to customers in Aintree, the many Crossroads of the Hill Country, and the outskirts of the City,
Fenn bequeathed the estate to his only daughter Fennoria and her husband Channor.
Later, Maeoria and her husband Xavier Manyon made their home at Candlebridge. Both Healer and Auria Manyon were born there.
Carriage House in the City:
Located in a quiet neighborhood of the City, Carriage House was the later, additional gift of Brenmor to Fenn the Architect for the completion of Coast Road, a major construction project linking the City to Crennelly Harbor.
Carriage House was Fennoria's childhood home and later, Maeoria's refuge.
The Ovals of Stone in the City
Though their origin remains a bit of a mystery, the tale begins here. A dusty traveler is climbing the wooden steps that lead to the stage.
Cloaked, full-bearded, and with silvered hair free-flowing, he strode to the center of the stage with nothing in hand (though he'd given over his Cliffdweller’s pipes and harp to a daughter for safekeeping.)
Taking his bearings, he stood at the exact center, shifting himself from left to right until he was satisfied with the alignment.
It was clear these were practiced movements, like tuning a musical instrument, done here othertimes, if not often, and drenched in memory.
From his pack he extracted a carved folding seat, a thing of wings as he spread it to sit down, with the air of a listener. As if he were the audience and we the performers chatting, socializing, acting out our petty cares as we sat or lay or supported one another on the curved tiers of stone.
Embarrassed, we stopped everything we were doing and hushed ourselves to hear his tale.
Enemy Stronghold, in the Far Country
The SpellCasters, DreamCasters and a community called the Family established an outpost, far from their origins, in the Far North.
Hwyll the SpellCaster held Haldor the Metalsmith prisoner there during the Terrible Wars.
